US to world: please ignore Mr Bush

There are three crucial issues I believe to be facing us in the world right now, and they are, as I have lately been discussing with some of my close friends, all closely interlinked.

One is our reliance on hard power to dominate the world – the good news is that this will eventually destroy us, if we continue in this path, just as it did the Soviet Union in the cold war. The bad news is that, on the way, there will be tremendous human suffering. The worse news is that we face other another more pressing issue.

The second of these issues may just be another face of the first: the vast and desperate gap between the haves and the have-nots; those without suffer even more because of these other two issues. These other two issues are used (intentionally or not) to oppress those who have less, and it is largely through the oppressive economic exploitation of those-who-have-less (less stuff, fewer opportunities, etc) that these other two issues have been made possible.

But the last of these issues may make the other two moot – we are destroying our planet. I received a forwarded email from my brother this morning, asking me to sign a petition – a rare thing indeed – and I signed it. I wanted to pass it along to you. Please join me in calling on the world leaders gathered in Bali to ignore Mr. Bush. Please sign this emergency petition (original forward text in blockquote below):

I just signed an emergency petition to try and stop President Bush from blocking crucial UN climate negotiations in Bali. The rest of the world has agreed on a schedule for carbon emissions cuts to stop catastrophic climate change, but with only 48 hours left Bush is blocking the agreement!

The petition is from Americans to world leaders at Bali, saying that Bush doesn’t represent us — it’s going to be delivered directly to summit negotiators as well as in an ad campaign and demonstrations by activists there. It will help other countries to refuse to give in to the Bush team by showing they don’t have the support of Americans. There’s just 48 hours to turn this around - sign up at this link! -
