Decision Making

I care deeply about how people make decisions, whether alone or in groups. Some of these documents are written entirely by others, and some entirely by me, but none of us got here without some help along the way. I make them available here in the hope that you might find them valuable as you find your way through the world.

  • Sociocracy (3 pages, ready to use. Synthesized by Gavin White from a variety of sites.)
  • On Conflict and Consensus (by CT Butler and Amy Rothstein - in the bibliography of almost every major work related to group decision-making processes since it was written; a valuable piece of reading if you are interested in doing consensus without getting bogged down by internal conflict.)

I’m also working on drafting the first version of the “Good Order Of Democracy Rules” (”GOOD Rules”). In initial design, these will be a secular version of the Quaker decision-making process, intended to serve as a parliamentary authority (a complete replacement for Robert’s Rules of Order). Once they’re completed, they will be subject to revision by the Good Order Of Democracy, an organization whose purpose will be the maintenance of those rules and education of its members about their use, and whose membership will consist of those operating under the GOOD Rules who notify the organization that they wish to participate.
